Race, racism and racial identity are of interest to me since they have played a large role in the person I am today. While I identify as Black, and experience the world as a Black person, I am technically "biracial" (not keen on this term but can't think of an alternative!) I believe that the BLACK biracial person is in a unique situation in terms of experiencing racism as a Black person, yet having been raised by a white parent. Thus as a Black "mixed race" individual, I don’t share the experiences of many "mixed folk" with regard to the “what are you?” question that people who are acknowledged as mixed race may get, and I can't relate to the experiences of mixed race individuals who pass for white. At the same time, I have faced issues growing up such as racism from white relatives and general "over exposure" to white people that the average Black person doesn't have to confront.
