The difference between a good engineer and a great one has little to do with technical skill. It's all the other stuff that matters most. Things like the ability to describe a very technical concept to a non-technical person, being able to accurately estimate how long a set of tasks will take to complete, and having consistently repeatable troubleshooting processes that solve problems as they occur. People with these "other" skills get ahead.
